Bahia Palace

Marrakech

Details of the activity

The Bahia Palace is one of the most important architectural works of Marrakech. It was built at the end of the 19th century with the hope of being the most impressive palace of all time. The construction of the palace took more than a decade and was completed by the grand vizier of Sultan Abdelaziz Si Moussa. At the end of the 19th century, the palace fell into the hands of Abu Bou Ahmed, a black slave turned vizier who gave the building its current appearance. The palace is spread over 8 hectares and accommodates 150 rooms which overlook various interior courtyards and gardens. The most interesting part of the Bahia Palace is the harem of 4 wives and 24 concubines of Abu Bou Ahmed. The name of the palace means in French "the beautiful" or "the beautiful". Several theories exist around its meaning: it could be in reference to the palace or to the vizier's favorite wife, the translation in this case would be "The Palace of Beauty". Looted rooms The downside of visiting the palace is most certainly the fact that the rooms are empty. Right after the vizier's death, many people, including his wives and the Sultan himself, looted every room in the palace. Fortunately, the impressive decoration on the ceiling has been preserved. Unmissable Even if many people think that the palace is not spectacular, the Bahia Palace is one of the most beautiful buildings that can be visited in Marrakech. You will certainly not regret paying the 10 dirhams that the entrance is worth. Ideal with a guide Since the palace is empty, it would be more interesting to make the visit with a tourist guide in order to listen to a lot of information on its history.
