Essaouira was declared World Heritage in 2001 and is nicknamed The Pearl of the Atlantic or Sleeping Beauty. Essaouira is a small fortified city on the edge of the Atlantic. Located 180 kilometers west of Marrakech, the city is a less touristy place where people are generally friendlier and where you are less pressured to buy. The main activity is fishing and if you get to Essaouira early enough you may see the fishermen unload the fish at the port forming a human chain. If you like fish or seafood, you can taste all kinds of them at very low prices.

How to get to Essaouira? - Book an organized excursion: on Visitons Marrakech, you will find organized excursions that take you directly from the hotel to drive you to Essaouira with a French-speaking tourist guide for only 35 €. - Bus: The coaches leave from the Marrakech bus station and the ticket costs around 50 dh (4.60 €). It may be the most economical solution to travel to Essaouira if you are traveling alone or with a partner. There are different companies, the best might be CTM. The trip takes about two and a half hours. - Rent a car: Driving in Morocco is not as easy as it seems and the roads really leave a lot to be desired. If you still want to venture out, we recommend the GPS. - Book a taxi for a whole day: This option can be the most economical if you manage to negotiate a good price (80 € -100 € per day). The taxi drivers speak French.
